Iran’s international ministry has declared the victory of “multilateralism, peace and safety”, because the UN’s standard arms embargo successfully expired on October 18, regardless of Washington’s strain to reimpose sanctions.
“As of immediately, all restrictions on the switch of arms, associated actions and monetary providers to and from The Islamic Republic of Iran, and all prohibitions concerning the entry or transit by territories of the United Nations Member States beforehand imposed on numerous Iranian residents and army officers, are all mechanically terminated,” Iran’s International Ministry stated in an announcement on midnight October 18.

Below the Joint Complete Plan of Motion (JCPOA), a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, the UN arms embargo on Iran expires on October 18, according to Safety Council Decision 2231.
Washington has been scrambling to forestall the lifting of the UN arms embargo, which was imposed in 2007 by the Safety Council, and claimed that “snapback” sanctions beneath the 2015 accord can be imposed. The strain was broadly denounced by the UN Safety Council, with even European allies arguing that the US has no authorized authority to set off the mechanism, after it unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018.
